State court denies Cook Inlet belugas special status Cook Inlet beluga whales won't be getting special protection under the Alaska Endangered Species Act, following a ruling by the Alaska Supreme Court. The high court upheld a 2002 decision by a lower court that sided with state officials who declined to list the whales as endangered. The Department of Fish and Game had decided the Cook Inlet belugas, although diminished, weren't immediately threatened with extinction and didn't qualify as a separate subspecies or species under state law… http://www.news-miner.com/Stories/0,1413,113~7244~2311442,00.html 9. Tariff little comfort to struggling Texas shrimpers When a rare virus hit his shrimp ponds this year, Fritz Jaenike feared the disease might wipe out the crop as it did in many South Texas farms in 1995. His crop seems to have recovered thanks to a costly restocking with virus-resistant larvae. But other problems have farmers in one of the top shrimp-producing states feeling uneasy as harvest begins: Foreign competition, low prices, labor problems and high fuel costs… http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/9310030.htm?1c 11. Shrimp Tariffs Imposed By U.S. Despite Protests …it probably won't alter prices dramatically or provide substantial help to the ailing U.S. shrimp industry, which had petitioned for the relief… …Southern Shrimp Alliance President, Eddie Gordon indicated in a statement that the group wasn't completely happy with the ruling. "We commend the Department of Commerce for imposing antidumping duties, but feel that in certain instances, the duties underestimate the seriousness of the violations," he said. In its petition, the group claimed that cheap imports cut the value of the U.S. shrimp harvest to $560 million in 2002 from $1.25 billion in 2000, as the average dockside price of Gulf of Mexico shrimp nearly halved to $3.30 a pound. http://www.truthabouttrade.org/article.asp?id=2239 12. Made in the U.S.A. - Time Magazine on COOL Where does that hamburger come from? Those strawberries? America's ranchers and farmers think you have the right to know… …Alaska fishermen, who catch only wild salmon at sea (fish farms are prohibited in the state), are being hammered by farm-raised salmon from Chile and Canada. "In 1988 I got $1 a pound for pink salmon. Now I get 7¢," says Scott McAllister, steering his boat past Alaska's Glacier Bay. He believes labels will help. "[People] will think it's cool to buy Alaska salmon from a wild and grizzly guy out here," he says. "And they will pay more for something healthy."…
