1. Aquaculture ban extension considered

Alaska officials most likely could block the development of fish farms in federally managed waters far off the state's shores, a U.S. Commerce Department representative said Tuesday. But the federal official said it was premature to say that Alaska definitely will have the power to prevent the farms…

Chaves said federal officials wouldn't permit fish farms in waters off Alaska if the state opposed them under the Coastal Zone Management Act, which coordinates federal and state objectives on coastal and ocean development.

Alaska's participation in the coastal zone management program, however, is in doubt…

2. Threat to pull out of coastal management plan

Local governments and some state legislators are worried that if Gov. Frank Murkowski pulls the state from a coastal management program, Alaska would lose its influence over federal projects…

3. Intrafish feature on Gov. Murkowski to the rescue…

When Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski took office just over two years ago, the state’s salmon industry was in a tailspin. Since then, he has pumped tens of millions into revitalizing the salmon sector. And it seems to be working.

Sen. Ted Stevens surprised some Alaska fishermen Thursday when he said he believes the state should allow fish farms.

8. NOAA Magazine: The future of coastal and ocean economics

For the last few years, coastal managers and economists have been working to determine the “value” of ocean and coastal resources. A new national initiative, called the National Ocean Economics Program, or NOEP, is trying to answer these questions and others so that coastal managers have a better understanding of the value of an area’s resources and how important they are to local and national economies.

A geoduck clam farm leaseholder on Wednesday sought a court order to block the Department of Fish and Game from conducting a commercial fishery on its farm sites and others in southern Southeast Alaska.

Etolin Enterprises received leases for two farm sites near Wrangell on Feb. 7. Its lawsuit was a response to the department's announcement Feb. 11 that 27 geoduck sites in the region would be open for harvests of wild clams by qualified commercial divers as soon as Tuesday. No fishery has begun…
