1. Senator Murkowski introduces legislation banning federal fish farming Sen. Lisa Murkowski introduced legislation today to ban fish farming in federal waters offshore nationwide. The legislation, if passed, would declare that no aquaculture shall occur in waters beyond the three-mile state boundaries until federal agencies study diseases, pollution, genetic mixing risks and economic effects, among other issues… Mark Vinsel, executive director of United Fishermen of Alaska in Juneau, said his group opposes fish farming categorically, but is “very pleased with Sen. Murkowski taking the lead pro-actively on this issue on behalf of Alaskans.” http://www.kodiakdailymirror.com/?pid=19&id=1374 & Juneau Empire: Senator Lisa draws a bead on fish farms

Marine Life Complicates Removal of Old Oil Rigs … rigs have spawned lush marine habitats that are home to a profusion of rare corals and 10,000 to 30,000 fish each… For differing reasons, aquaculture farmers, biotechnology companies, fishermen, scientists and oil executives agree that a new life could await the rigs once they are no longer needed for drilling... But in a bit of environmental irony, the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, which requires the removal of obsolete oil rigs, stands in the way of these proposed uses and threatens the surprising marine habitats… http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A42189-2005Apr10.html & Administration backing fish farming in the Gulf of Mexico

Consumers catch on to good seafood choices Only recently has it occurred to most of us that bringing large quantities of seafood to our tables can damage the delicate ecosystem of our oceans and seas. A new federal seafood-labeling law should give us more information on which to base our purchasing decisions… http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/living/food/11381815.htm 6. Label all seafood with point of origin - Letter to the editor by Jim Ayers Sustainable salmon fisheries provide critical jobs and food for Americans throughout the Pacific… As such, we are very concerned about the U.S. Department of Agriculture's arbitrary decision to exclude processed cooked seafood like canned, pouched and smoked salmon from labeling requirements. We doubt Congress intended federal regulators to exclude the majority of salmon products from labeling; yet that is exactly what is happening.
