2. Farm-Raised Salmon Poses Increased Health Risks for Consumers - Dioxin

Consumption of farm-raised salmon poses greater health risks from dioxin and dioxin-like compounds than does the consumption of wild salmon, according to a study published in the May 2005 issue of the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Health Perspectives…

The research was initiated and supported by the Environmental Division of the Pew Charitable Trusts. The article is available free of charge at http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/members/2005/7626/7626.html.

3. Sen. Murkowski pleased with canned salmon recommendation in federal program

Sen. Lisa Murkowski applauded a report by the National Academies of Science which reviewed the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) food packages and recommended that canned salmon be included as a part of the national program… http://murkowski.senate.gov/pressapp/record.cfm?id=237008

4. SB113: Senate approves bill to end groundfish derbies

Proponents say harvest shares give fishermen as much time as they need to pull in the catch…

Commercial groundfish derbies in the Gulf of Alaska could become a thing of the past under a bill passed Monday in the state Senate.

The bill by Sen. Ben Stevens, R-Anchorage, would allow the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission to set regulations to create a fisheries rationalization system that would allocate harvest shares among fishermen…

5. HB218: Alaskan bill levies tax on fish to pay for hatcheries

Several Alaska commercial-fishing groups are backing a legislative bill that would allow fishing crews to harvest all hatchery fish but assess a heavy tax to pay the hatcheries' expenses….

Hatcheries have a competitive edge, often receiving a better price than fishermen for their catch, said Rob Zuanich, executive director of the Alaska Seine Boat Owners Association.

The other concern is more basic: Fishermen would rather be the ones catching the fish.

6. Pebble mine issue must weigh harm vs. benefits - Jay Hammond in Kodiak Daily Mirror

…Am I unalterably opposed to the Pebble mine? Only if it fails to meet the, four criteria required to assure minimal harm and maximum benefit. Is it environmentally sound? Can it pay its own way or will it fail to generate enough revenue to offset costs of state involvement in furnishing and maintaining infrastructure and services, environmental assessment, monitoring and enforcement and multitude of other hidden costs? Do the majority of Alaskans desire the project? Will it contribute something to the permanent fund in order to meet our constitution’s mandate that all our natural resources be managed for the maximum benefit of the people?

7. Bristol Bay in NY Times: Prospect of a Mine Near a Salmon Fishery Stirs Worry in Alaska

The Bristol Bay watershed, an intricate system of lakes, streams and rivers that are home to some of the world's greatest salmon runs, is remarkably unchanged by human activity…

But Bristol Bay is also an economically depressed region that is home to rich mineral deposits. And prospectors are spending tens of millions of dollars on plans for mining operations across the headwaters of the salmon fishery, which could change the region forever.

9. Governor announces Blue Ribbon Panel to Review CDQ Program

Governor Frank H. Murkowski Wednesday announced the appointment of a “Blue Ribbon” Community Development Quota Program Review Panel.

“The CDQ program has been a story of success in bringing investment and dollars into areas in great need of economic activity,” said the governor. “But, like anything, the program can be improved. I have charged this panel with doing a comprehensive review of the CDQ program. They will report back to me the program’s benefits, but also changes we can make to ensure a strong CDQ program going forward.”

10. New halibut permits ready for subsistence fishermen

NMFS provides notice of the guideline harvest level (GHL) for the guided sport halibut fishery (charter fishery) in the International Pacific Halibut Commission (IPHC) regulatory area 2C of 1,432,000 pounds (649.5 mt), and a GHL in the IPHC regulatory area 3A of 3,650,000 pounds (1,655.6 mt). The GHLs are intended to serve as a

benchmark for participants in the charter fishery…

12. Rec. Fishing Alliance continues efforts to oppose Alaska charter boat IFQs

On April 8 th , Jim Donofrio and Sloan Rappoport of the RFA and a delegation from the Alaska Charter Association met with Senator Ted Stevens' senior staff members to discuss the problems associated with a plan to implement halibut Individual Fishing Quotas (IFQ) on the Alaska charter boat fleet…

http://www.joinrfa.org/news.asp#n9

(&&& RFA also opposes efforts to open longlining areas that were closed due to turtle bycatch, even though this problem has been solved by implementation of circle hooks like we use up here… http://www.joinrfa.org/news.asp#n8 )

13. Circle hooks diminish capture of sea turtles

Research shows that replacing the so-called "J" and tuna hooks with circle hooks reduce the severity of injury to sea turtles. Circle hooks have points that curve inwards toward the shank of the hook..

14. International Smartgear competition awards sea turtle protection innovations

As the world prepared to observe Earth Day, World Wildlife Fund and its partners in the International Smart Gear Competition announced three new winning solutions to prevent the accidental maiming and killing of marine mammals, juvenile fish, and sea turtles that become ensnared by fishing nets and longlines - a problem known as bycatch - while also improving the efficiency of commercial fishing.

16. GAO Endangered Species Report: Little Reason to Expect Poor Recovery Record To Improve

From House Resources Press release April 27:

Because only a handful of domestic species, 10 of more than 1200, have ever been recovered and removed from the endangered species list, House Committee on Resources Chairman Richard W. Pombo (R-CA) engaged the Government Accounting Office (GAO) in reviewing how the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) allocates funds to recovery efforts. The report released today noted that not a single plant or animal with the highest recovery priority was among the 20 species receiving the most recovery dollars…

17. NOAA: Administration’s Salmon Recovery Efforts Remain On Track

Thanks to an emphasis on cooperative conservation, local recovery planning and technological improvement, salmon in the Northwest are continuing a trend of six straight years of strong returns.

“We have entered a new era in salmon recovery,” said Bob Lohn, Northwest regional director of NOAA Fisheries. “As our effort to develop subbasin recovery plans illustrates, this new era is one in which citizens at the local level are driving salmon recovery. Only by engaging in cooperative conservation with citizens around the region will we be able to achieve recovery for endangered species listed salmon…

18. CA: Salmon fishery protections unnerve commercial fishermen

Sunday was the opening day of California's commercial salmon season, and a few boats had returned to the docks by late afternoon -- very few.

Worse, the number of fish they carried in their holds would barely make enough lox to stock the buffet at a country club Sunday brunch…

The truncated season is the latest development in a long-running conflict over the Klamath River, one that pits the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and farmers against fishermen and conservationists…

20. MMRC gets the inside scoop on Sea lion diet

Scientists studying the sharp population decline of Alaska's Steller sea lions are literally trying to resolve the mystery from the inside out using DNA analysis…

Arguably not a job for the weak-of-stomach, scat analysis has proven to be a useful tool for furthering our understanding of the sea lion diet. By removing and identifying the 'hard parts' from a scat sample, such as bones from different fish species, researchers can deduce the contents of a sea lion's recent meals…
